Settles Bridge Flooding

Some of the homes in our subdivision are experiencing problems with overflow of creeks onto their property, and have asked if there is something that the City or County can do to help alleviate the problem.  In a nutshell, unless the water is flooding because of a downstream blockage (such as an undersized culvert) there is nothing that they are going to do.
For instance, if a recorded drainage easement in your back yard is eroding (or overflowing) during heavy rains the City will probably not correct it.  Drainage easements are on private property, and when the property was purchased with an easement, the owner accepted responsibility for ongoing maintenance of the easements.  The City
will offer technical assistance to help find solutions.
In many situations stabilizing the site with rock (rip-rap) will help alleviate the problem. The City will provide and deliver rock to the property at a significantly reduced cost, but the property owner is responsible for placing the rock where it is needed to correct the problem.  Contact the City of Suwanee Public Works Department at 770-945-8996.
