Wal-Mart Cemetery?

Glance at the Suwanee Wal-Mart site at the corner of Satellite and Lawrenceville Suwanee road you will see what looks almost like an Indian mound near the front of the property.  This is actually the site of an old family graveyard that is now in the center of a controversy between Wal-Mart and local residents.

Buried in this plot are anywhere from 13 to 20 members of the Lockridge family.  The oldest graves are for James Lockridge and his wife, Mary Ann.  James died sometime between 1840 and 1850.  Nobody seems to know the date of death of his wife.

The Gwinnett Historical Society is working to try and find a resolution that will make everyone happy.  The original owner of the property had planned to restore it and fence it in, but Wal-Mart would rather it be moved.  The family would like the graves to stay where they are.
