Easter Egg Hunt and Homeowners Meeting

On Saturday, April 14th, the Settles Bridge Homeowners Association had a combination Easter Egg Hunt and Homeowner's Association meeting. Mark and Rita Joshi volunteered their home, and many of the neighborhood kids showed up to hunt eggs, eat food, get prizes and visit with the Easter Bunny.

Motor Driven Scooters

The primary topic discussed at the April 14 meeting was what many homeowners see as a growing problem with neighborhood children riding motor powered scooters. And the primary concern was for the safety of these children. While driving through the neighborhood, several residents have had to take drastic measures to keep from colliding with one of these riders.

According to Georgia Law, anyone who has a scooter and drives it on the road must have at least a learner's license. Scooters are subject to traffic laws just like anyone else, although they are not required to have tags or lights:

Sec. 40-6-349 GA Code

(1) Motorized scooters (gas or electric powered) are governed under the state laws for "Mopeds" and are considered the same.

(2) Operating any motorized (gas or electric) Moped on public streets and right-of-way requires the operator to be 15 years of age and have at least a state learner's permit in their possession while operating the vehicle.

(3) Helmets are mandatory

Officer Election

Also at the meeting, the following residents were selected to serve on the Association's Board:

President David Hancock
Vice President Bill Williams
Treasurer Darlene Rogers
Secretary Rita Joshi
Members at Large Ron Rogers, Bob Conor, Roger Kennedy

Spring Garage Sale - Advanced Notice

The SBHA will again sponsor the spring community garage sale on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, which puts it this year on May 26th from 8:00 am until 1:00 pm. Memorial Day weekend is the traditional weekend in Gwinnett County for neighborhood garage sales, and we have had great success in past years. This is just a few weeks from now, so start to prepare your items for sale - and be sure to put balloons on your mailbox before 8:00 on the 26th if you are participating. This sale will be advertised in the Atlanta Constitution and the Gwinnett Post. We are shortening the time this year because North Gwinnett HS is holding graduation on that day, and there will be increased traffic on our streets during the afternoon for family receptions.

SBHA Dues Update

As of May 1st quite a number of families have made their year 2001 financial contribution to the SBHA. It looks like a lot of folks want to make sure they are eligible for the "Early Bird" drawing that will take place at the SBHA picnic. If you have not yet sent in your support check you have until 5:00 on May 11th to still be eligible for the drawing.

Free Poppas Grass Plants

We will soon be contracting to have the Poppas Grass plants removed from the front entrance and replaced with new shrubs and foliage. If you would like make arrangements to remove any of these plants for your own use in your garden or landscaping they are being offered to our residents in the subdivision free of charge before we have them torn out. Please contact Ron Rogers immediately at 770-932-8276 to make arrangements.

Tech-Talk

Talk about obsolete technology, how times have changed! Can you remember the first electronic calculator released to the general public? It was the Texas Instrument SR-10 brought out in 1967 and was little more than a four function (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and square root) calculator. It contained over 150 parts and sold for just under $200! Today, calculators with those functions and more all integrated on one chip of silicon cost less than $4.

In Canada the government equivalent of the US FCC, Industry Canada, has begun a 90 day comment period to understand when and under what conditions to license technology that would prevent cell phone users from receiving and making cell phone calls in such places as restaurants, theaters, churches, libraries, concert halls, etc. due to mounting public outcry about poor cell phone etiquette. The technology being considered would basically jam all cell phones in a given area to block cell phones from operating normally.

Com One, a French telecom company, has developed an Internet appliance that will be hitting the market this summer. The "@Max" is aimed at non-users of home personal computers. In addition to Web browsing and e-mail use it will also function as an answering machine, fax machine, speakerphone, and image viewer. It has an 8-inch screen and will be priced in the $500 range.

Around the world, by the time the year 2003 gets here the number of e-mail messages is expected to reach over 450 trillion annually!

A flashlight beam you can't see? Well, LEDtronics offers solid-state replacement bulbs for ordinary filament flashlight bulbs. The high intensity light-emitting diodes bulbs come with a standard flange fitting and last far longer than normal bulbs. They make batteries last longer for the same amount of light output and come in a variety of colors, including infrared!

Get Ready - the annual SBHA picnic is scheduled for June 24!
